Contributing to a Learning Planet: Global Education, Internationalisation and Sustainable Development

Authors: Shiel, C.

Conference: The Learning Planet: A Guide to Global Education

Dates: 26 June 2012

Abstract:

The presentation will explore what we mean by global education and internationalisation considering interpretations, drivers, and the implications for education. Consideration will be given to how the student learning experience might be internationalised and enhanced, so that all students gain an international experience and are able to operate in a global context.

Preparing globally employable graduates is an important goal but what is involved in ensuring that they also contribute to the well-being of the planet? The presentation will draw on the speaker’s experience of developing global perspectives, global citizenship and education for sustainable development within higher education. It will be suggested that addressing these issues within the curriculum (and going beyond internationalisation) presents challenges but offers the potential to enhance employability and contribute to a better world.
