Risk & Childbirth: A Social Science

Authors: Van Teijlingen, E.

Conference: Time 4 You 2- Maternity Conference

Dates: 15 October 2014

Abstract:

We live a generally risk averse society, something that affects childbirth as much any other aspect of life. However, we are often not aware that 'risk' is socially constructed, i.e. it may not represent the most likely or burdensome hazards. This conference presentation aims to highlight some of the sociological analysis of pregnancy and childbirth, including the notion of the so-called medical/social model of childbirth.
