Abstract:

It is 50 years since a colliery spoil tip in Aberfan, South Wales, engulfed the village school, killing 116 children and 28 adults. The paper examines media coverage of Aberfan and subsequent tragedies that have led to the loss of children's lives such as the 1996 Dunblane school shooting and the 1999 shooting rampage at Columbine High School in the United States. Drawing on lessons from personal experience as a journalist and on work with the Dart Centre for Journalism & Trauma, the paper sets out best practice suggestions for journalists interviewing victims and survivors of trauma.
