Abstract:

This paper discusses some of the most formidable barriers to the communication of climate change to ordinary people, and how the news media might — and might not help — in overcoming these barriers. Drawing on research findings from the UK and elsewhere, Associate Professor An Nguyen from Bournemouth University explores these obstacles from both media- and audience-centred perspectives, with the ultimate aim being to promote a more insightful understanding of the complex social and psychological dynamics of climate change engagement and how media messages might fit into that dynamics.
