Biography

I am a sport and exercise psychologist at Bournemouth University. My area of expertise is self-regulation, personality, and health behaviour change across the lifespan in the context of exercise adoption and maintenance. I am a British Psychological Society (BPS) Chartered Psychologist, AFBPS, and an accredited Sport & Exercise Psychologist (Health & Care Professional Councils, UK). I was a full-time researcher from November 2011 until May 2015. During this period I was awarded a total of $2,567621 external research funds. I was the Chief Investigator of Sporting Success project in Melbourne, Australia. This was funded by the Australian Sport Commission, Australian Institute of Sport, VU and Gymnastics Australia (total: $350,070). I am a co-investigator for Men’s Mental Health Project funded by Movember ($1,986,778); Medicare Local ($169,693) the Equal Play project funded by Beyond Blue ($122,000), and of the Jack Brockhoff Foundation grant ($24,150).

Research

My main research focus is the SportingSuccessUK (www.sportingsuccessuk.org) Project. It investigates role strain arising from adolescents combining extra-curricular activities with their educational requirements. Other research interests are investigating the relationship between movement efficiency, academic achievements and long-term sport participation; mental health of LGBT youth in PE and sport clubs; mental health concerns of young men and boys in sports clubs; the use of motivational interviewing techniques in reducing sitting time in stroke survivals and Type D personality and health.
