Biography

Dr Feng TIAN is an Associate Professor in the School of Design, Engineering & Computing (DEC), Bournemouth University. He has been researching in the areas of Computer Graphics, Computer Animation, NPR, Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, etc. and has published over 90 papers in peer reviewed international journals and conferences. Prior to joining in Bournemouth University, he was an Assistant Professor in the School of Computer Engineering, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. As a visiting scholar, he has been visiting and collaborating with a number of universities, including Paris University XI, France, New South-Wales University, Australia, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, etc.

Research

I have been working on the computer graphics, computer animation, augmented reality, simulation for more than 15 years. Here are some of my current research projects:

Texture splatting is a 3D terrain texturing technique which has been used in computer games for the last decade. This project researches and develops new blending techniques that make the distinction between features (areas of the terrain texture that should protrude through underlying textures, e.g. bricks) and non–features (areas of the terrain texture that do not protrude through underlying textures, e.g. the mortar/cement between brick features).

With the aid of multimedia (videos, pictures, voice, animations, games etc.), online learning/education has greatly improved and enriched the learners’ learning performance and experience. The objective of this project is to design and develop a novel learning/education environment or platform where the learning materials can be created, customized and deployed through the web, efficiently and effectively, aiming to improve the learners’ self–efficacy and enhance their interactivity, feedback and assessment.

Smart phones make gaming part of everyday life and its potential to enhance a tourist’s experience represents a new industry frontier which this project will pioneer. This project aims to create a new industry paradigm by engaging tourists in a dynamic, personalized and contextualized experience, through Augmented Reality Gaming (ARG) delivered via smart phones.
