Abstract:

AIM · To determine community pharmacists' approach to harm reduction initiatives associated with problem drug use. DESIGN · A specially designed postal questionnaire survey. SUBJECTS AND SETTING · 176 community pharmacy contractors in Lothian; 82 (47%) replied. OUTCOME MEASURES · Self-reported attitudes and behaviour. RESULTS · Nearly all respondents dispensed substitute drugs. One third had participated in needle and syringe exchange at some stage and half were willing to supervise methadone consumption on the premises. Most had problems with drug users but felt comfortable when dealing with such clients in their pharmacy. CONCLUSIONS · Lothian community pharmacists are making an important contribution to the management of problem drug users, but feel that there is scope for the development of service provision.
