Abstract:

© 2013 Taylor & Francis. This research focuses on the development and use of applied experimental methods to analyze participant responses to color contrast, and color combinations, in order to describe the signs of simple and complex designs. This article presents the methodology and analysis results of the primary data collected from the research. The results of Study I and Study II in addition to Study III are reported in this article, with each study building iteratively upon the results of the previous study. This iterative method ensured a systematic approach that built on increasing knowledge of the influence of achromatic contrast, color contrast, and color combination, and the importance of each in contributing to design complexity. These results then contribute to the creation of a design tool that can aid designers and students in making informed color choices that are best suited to the design solution required. Color has the power to support or inhibit the design intention. In addition, color can either add complexity or simplify the appearance of the design form through different color contrasts and color combinations.
