Abstract:

In this article the MP3 is described as a marketplace icon. The MP3 is a good proxy to understand digital virtual objects of consumption and market mediation in the digital economy. Using the concept of stewardship as a type of compromised possession reliant on devices, software, market mediators and consumers themselves coming together in a particular way, the article maps out some practices that define MP3 consumption today.
