Abstract:

The total number of deaths associated with poisons was 2,914 in 1973, 3,071 in 1974 and 2,984 in 1975. Barbiturates had the highest frequency over the three year period with little change in the total number of citations. The benzodiazepines gradually appeared with increasing frequency despite the difficulties with analyses. Cases of poisoning with acetylsalicylic acid, paracetamol, dextropropoxyphene and tricyclic antidepressants increased over the three year period. © 1980, Forensic Science Society.
