Biography

Educator, media specialist, and writer, Mary Hogarth was previously Head of Features Journalism at Solent University and is now a HEA Senior Fellow with a fractional post at Bournemouth University.

With more than 20 years’ industry experience – including her role as Managing Editor of Writers International Ltd overseeing two national magazines – Mary set up The Magazine Expert Ltd in 2015. Her consultancy practice specialises in new title launches (print, online and digital), audience engagement, editorial development and sustainable business strategies.

To date, Mary has written numerous articles on magazine publishing and authored three books - How To Launch A Magazine In This Digital Age (Bloomsbury, 2014), Business Strategies for Magazine Publishing (Routledge, 2018) and Writing Feature Articles (Routledge, 2019).

Her research interests include sustainable publishing strategies and developing pedagogical practices to enhance employability while improving the student experience.

Recently, Mary has embarked on a PhD investigating how magazine business practices have evolved as a result of the digital age.

Research

My research focuses on magazine publishing from a business perspective. As part of my doctoral research, I am examining publishers’ approaches to developing sustainable business strategies. A key emphasis will be on investigating how publishers of print magazines are developing sustainable business strategies to counteract a downward trend in circulation and advertising sales.
