Biography

High quality research is crucial in providing the evidence base for improvements in health care and outcomes, and ensuring health budgets are spent effectively. Statisticians have a key role in ensuring that research is designed and conducted to a high standard.

I have 4 main roles; Head of Research in the Department of Nursing and Clinical Sciences, Professor of Health Care Statistics and Epidemiology, Co-Director of the Bournemouth University Clinical Research Unit (BUCRU) and Consultant for the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Research Design Service (RDS).

Currently my main methodological interest is in the design and conduct of randomised controlled trials, and my main research interest is in long term conditions and the development and evaluation of complex interventions. One of the many joys of my job is working with so many colleagues and collaborators from different disciplines and professions on so many interesting ideas.

I joined the University in 1996 as Reader with the Dorset Research and Development Support Unit, and was awarded a Personal Chair in 2001...

Research

Bournemouth University Clinical Research Unit (BUCRU) provides methodological support and collaboration to researchers from academic and health service settings. It does this mainly by helping researchers with developing high quality applications for research funding, and then ongoing involvement in funded research projects.

Recent and ongoing collaborations include projects looking at the management of perineal tears (PEARLS study and PREVIEW study), pain relief during labour (IDvIP), creativity in people who have had a stroke (HeART of Stroke), management of ankle fractures (ART), Tai Chi for people with dementia (TACIT) and the use of functional electrical stimulation for people with Parkinson's Disease (STEPS).

BUCRU also conducts its own programme of research in long-term conditions and complex interventions. Recent and ongoing studies include a randomised controlled trial of fatigue management in multiple sclerosis (FACETS trial), and the use of gaming devices to improve health and wellbeing in people with multiple sclerosis (MiiVitaliSe).

BUCRU also runs a methodology consultancy service for those who need advice on smaller projects, or commercial projects.

I am currently supervising 4 PhD students and have had 6 PhD completions.
