Utility of learning theories: Exploring the use of learning theories to strengthen interprofessional education programmes

The need and role of theory in interprofessional education (IPE) has been debated in the literature.

Educators' use of learning theories can shape how IPE is developed and delivered both in the classroom and in clinical practice. However, little work has been carried out to explore its utility in education practice.

This workshop will draw on literature regarding learning theories and ‘filter' it through participants' experiences to help them to explore the extent to which learning theories can be used to inform IPE programme development, in education practice. To encourage participants, from a variety of contexts and clinical settings, to engage in discussion and reflection on the use of learning theories to strengthen IPE programme development both in the classroom and in clinical practice. Following a short presentation reviewing learning theories with case examples of their utility in practice, small group facilitated discussions will be used to explore workshop participants' experiences of using learning theories and the extent to which these resonate with published work in the field. Key issues emerging from the small group discussions will be presented to the larger group and this will be followed by a plenary discussion on the utility of theory to strengthen instructional practice and facilitate research. The workshop discussions will provide insight into the practical utility of learning theories to inform IPE curriculum development. These findings will also be used to inform discussions and future developments within the International Interprofessional Theory Network group.
