Use of smart cards in road pricing and tolling systems

Abstract:

The potential uses of smart card technology in the transport sector, with applications as diverse as access control, toll and fare payment and portable data files, are investigated. Implementations in this field are still quite small mainly due to the fact that smart cards are a relatively new technology and the lack of standards to guarantee the real inter-operability of the technology. Several proposals to compensate for these constraints have been suggested and these are briefly discussed in the paper.
