Abstract:

Barley grown under constant temperature and light regimes in controlled environment cabinets may not respond to pathogen challenge in the same way as under variable, 'stressed' environments. We demonstrate that variable temperature regimes increase levels of inducible resistance in barley to powdery mildew, and that different genotypes have differing levels of inducible resistance. This has implications for gene discovery and expression studies of plant resistance mechanisms, and for field evaluation of resistance.
