Abstract:

Pregnancy and birth are very pivotal events in most women’s lives as well as that of their partners and families. These are biological and physiological events which are very much embedded in a social and cultural setting. For example, the things women are supposed to do during pregnancy and the way they are supposed to behave are very much defined by their surrounding paternalistic society. In other words, this is a clear case of ‘social construction of pregnancy and birth’.
