Abstract:

Mental health services still face the dilemma of 'care versus control,' reflecting societal anxiety about mental illness. Psychiatric Social Work in adult services work as Approved Social Workers predominantly concerned with formal admission. In the Child and Adolescent Mental Teams the role is more integrative. Recent research indicates the importance of the interactive bio-psycho-social model to address the increases in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism and recognizes the psychiatric-child protection interface to prevent extremes of abuse, assisting children of psychiatric parents to deal with the impact of mental illness - thus making children safer and contributing to the reduction of subsequent problems in their adulthood.
