Abstract:

Mental ill-health (illness) in adults is a common phenomenon with statistics suggesting one in four adults will experience mental health problems, typically at critical stages in their psychosocial development. This chapter presents a conceptual framework for understanding adult mental health and ill-health. Aimed at students and those working in the field, its purpose is to inform and enable people in the helping professions, to appreciate the everyday challenges and taboos that have an impact on the daily lives of adults who experience changes in their mental health and to employ practice that promotes recovery.
