Abstract:The LEGO Movie associate produced by Australian media conglomerate Village Roadshow with feature animation by Australian animation and visual effects studio Animal Logic, is the supreme realisation of this LEGO system-film system metaphor. It is replete with branded tieins, an exemplar par excellence of a set of dominant, contemporary ideological positions on organised labour, consumption, work and productive play. This chapter explores some of these elements, focusing on Animal Logic and what the film and the company’s contributions to the film can tell about both the contemporary Australian film industry, and the global Anglophone film industry. It discusses the role of the film’s success in Animal Logic’s international expansion and the reasons for the establishment of a satellite company in Vancouver. The chapter concludes with an elaboration of the increasing importance of China and the vast Chinese market to LEGO, to the LEGO movie franchise, and to the Australian film industry.
