Abstract:

Historically, little attention has been paid to the psychosocial impact of skin disease. More recently, the major detrimental impact on well being and quality of life for patients, as well as their partners, family, and friends, has been much more widely recognized. This chapter provides an overview of the psychosocial impact of skin disease, advises on developing effective consultations, and explains the principles of cognitive-behavioural therapy, habit reversal, and social cognitive theory, and how these may be used in dermatological nursing practice.
