Abstract:

Today, there is an increased focus on the internal culture of an organisation and the practical steps that can be introduced to develop and enhance a positive and collegiate culture of workplace practices (Woods in Higher Education 60: 171-185, 2010). Using Ubuntu, the African philosophy, this chapter provides examples and methodologies for practical approaches that leaders and managers can implement to develop the skills and abilities of individuals and in turn strengthen the teams in which they work. Ubuntu recognises that for a team to succeed there is a need to value everyone within the team, acknowledging their unique skills, approaches and core values. This allows leaders and managers to engage staff in a manner that both empowers them and enhances their wellbeing.
