Abstract:In addition to the training, preparatory, and recovery strategies that are implemented throughout the training week, match-day itself provides further intervention opportunities when seeking to enhance football players’ match-play performance. Such opportunities exist from >3 h before a player’s entry onto the pitch, to shortly before pitch-entry, and following kick-off during scheduled breaks in a game. This chapter discusses the potential role of morning priming exercise and hormonal priming in the lead-up to a match, before considering the design of a pre-match active warm-up that includes post-activation performance enhancement, as well as appropriate post-warm-up, half-time, substitute-specific, and pre-extra-time interventions. As evidence supports the potential for each strategy in isolation for improving football performance, combining several interventions may elicit additive beneficial effects. This chapter acknowledges the constraints that exist in the applied football environment and presents strategies in a manner that can be tailored to fit within current match-day routines. A theoretical model is presented that provides practical recommendations for how the relevant strategies may be implemented in isolation or in combination.
