Abstract:

3D printing and mass customisation are well suited for jewellery designing, customising, and printing, and this has been confirmed in a number of legal and empirical studies from 2015, 2018, and 2020. However, the law, in particular copyright law, remains unclear as to its application to 3D printing and mass customisation. Commencing with an exploration of the opportunities and challenges it presents, this chapter delves into a consideration of copyright law, particularly in questioning whether, in the context of mass customisation, CAD fileswhich are mainly used to design digital modelscan attract literary and artistic copyright and, as such, originality. Arguing for the affirmative, the chapter sets out some thoughts and recommendations for the future.
