Abstract:

This chapter describes the pathophysiology of spasticity within the context of upper motor neuron lesions and describes how electrical stimulation (ES) can be used to address these complex problems, as a stand-alone therapy and in conjunction with other modalities. Outcome measures are discussed and evidence for clinical benefit is presented. Three case studies illustrate how ES can be used to manage spasticity in clinical practice.
