Abstract:

This chapter examines overtourism challenges in African destinations, where rising tourism demand pressures natural and cultural resources, infrastructure, and communities. Using case studies from North, East, and Sub- Saharan Africa, it identifies key drivers and highlights sustainable logistics strategies. Tailored approaches include community- based tourism (CBT) in Zanzibar, empowering locals to manage tourism sustainably; eco- friendly infrastructure, like Cape Town’s electric buses, reducing emissions and congestion; and real- time visitor management systems in Kenya’s Maasai Mara, regulating peakseason traffic to protect ecosystems. The findings stress the importance of stakeholder collaboration, digital technologies, and resilient infrastructure in creating balanced tourism frameworks. By adopting these strategies, African destinations can promote economic growth while preserving cultural heritage and environmental integrity, positioning themselves as leaders in sustainable tourism.
