Abstract:This chapter provides a critically reflective discussion and analysis of concepts, definitions, and experiences of leadership in co-production, drawing on original case studies from people involved in co-production in social care and social work to highlight different views and experiences and the complexities involved. Specific sections include co-production through the lens of social theory and how systems can enable or prevent active participation; leadership models through the lens of co-production, arguing that effective leadership in co-production requires a compassionate and inclusive approach but also recognition of the context in which this is practised and the need to break down societal and structural barriers; and finally, co-production and leadership in social care and social work, drawing on role models in this field. The chapter itself is co-produced by Hughes and Laidlaw and retains these distinct perspectives throughout.
