Abstract:Chapter 1 sets the scene, drawing on three decades of research into early labour by the International Early Labour Research Group. Research has focused on diagnosing early labour and identifying how admission to hospital in the early phase of labour can lead to a cascade of routinised intervention (with significant personal, professional and economic consequences). The introduction highlights the challenges and opportunities to be addressed in the following chapters.
