Abstract:

Soil resistance data are initially recorded as numerical values that cannot be easily analyzed as lists or tables and therefore need to be converted into visual representations in order for us to discover patterns that may represent archaeological phenomena. Since the first hand-recorded and hand-plotted surveys, there has been a continuous improvement in ways of visualizing such data and in applying data-correction and image-processing techniques to improve their visual representation. Currently, the processing and visualization of routine resistance surveys is well understood and reasonably standardized. However, it is in the field of data fusion, where resistance data are combined with other geophysical, geochemical, and other scientific datasets, that the frontier of research lays.
