Abstract:

Successful applications of silicon nitride as a rolling contact bearing material have resulted in the extension of silicon nitride in other rolling contact applications in the automotive and power production industries. A silicon nitride made by reaction bonding and sintering has already been in mass production for diesel engine components, where their much better rolling contact fatigue (RCF) performance than steel components allow engine manufacturers to reduce warranty cost. A main obstacle for broader application is relatively high material cost, especially during component surface finishing process. Further understanding of rolling contact fatigue of silicon nitride in relation to its surface integrity will give engine and bearing manufacturers an opportunity to extend its application.
