This work presents developed methods for computer-based simulation of ultrasound scanning a patient’s lumbar spine of various BMIs, for ultrasound-guided epidural needle insertion. Computer-based synthetic ultrasound methods enable trainees to learn needle insertion methods prior to practice on patients in-vivo. Recent interventional procedure guidance for epidural promotes the use of ultrasound during needle insertion although currently there are no simulators allowing ultrasound-guided epidural practice. This work aims to develop methods for providing such simulation, to enhance training and reduce rick of injury to epidural patients.
