Abstract:We describe research designed to measure the resilience of a temperate forest ecosystem in southern England, which employed analysis of long-term data, gradient analysis and spatially explicit modelling conducted at the landscape scale. We analysed three separate components of resilience, namely recovery, resistance and persistence, under both 'pulse' and 'press' disturbance regimes. The results provide insights into the mechanisms underlying resilience, and how the resilience concept might best be operationalised in practice, in relation to both management and monitoring.
