Childbirth and Trauma: Social/Medical Model

Authors: van Teijlingen, E.

Conference: Royal College of Midwives, Learning Reps’ Behind The Trauma

Dates: 21 June 2019

Abstract:

Conference presentation offers sociological perspective on trauma in pregnancy and childbirth. It highlights that not all trauma is the same and that social factors play a (large) role in women's ability to cope.

We can look at childbirth through different lenses (medical/social model).

The media lean to a more medicalised model of birth as they sensationalise birth. The question for this conference is : "What does this mean for midwifery practice?"
