Abstract:

Asynchronous Video Interviews (AVIs) are a valuable tool used by major companies for employee recruitment. Recruiters use AVI platforms such as VidCruiter, Jobma, and Willo to produce pre-set questions which candidates answer via short, recorded video clips, usually within a time limit.

The Level 5 students taking the ‘Managing People in Tourism and Hospitality’ unit are taught about AVIs and are increasingly encountering this recruitment and selection format in their placement search. Therefore, replicating the AVI format for unit assessment would deliver an authentic assessment opportunity and provide the students with valuable skills and experience as they embarked on their placement search.

BUBS Learning Technologist Rob Walter worked tirelessly to find the best platform to replicate the AVI software, finding a neat solution within Brightspace Quizzes. The unit team produced a job interview letter, person specification, and job description and over 100 interview questions to ensure no two ‘candidates’ experienced the same ‘interview’.

The AVI format provided an authentic assessment opportunity which was GAIT-resistant. The unit team provided lots of support and feedforward ahead of the AVI, with students having the opportunity to check the format of the interview, interview workshops, an extensive FAQ page on Brightspace, and to try two test interviews and have individual feedback meetings with their tutors. Students who made full use of the support on offer increased their average mark for this assessment by almost 19%.

Student feedback on the AVI assessment format was incredibly positive, with the unit team receiving many emails of thanks for the ‘useful and valuable’ assessment and the ‘quick feedback given on the test videos and the teaching support’. In my 20+ years’ experience of facilitating learning within HE, this is the first time I have ever been thanked by students for setting an assessment!
