Abstract:Thermo-active geotechnical structures are becoming increasingly popular due to their dual function - providing stability as foundations and low-carbon heating and cooling as heat exchangers. Although they have been used for decades, their geotechnical performance is yet to be fully understood. Current practice generally involves the application of large factors of safety, which may lead to an over-conservative design. In this paper, the thermo-mechanical behaviour of a single pile is investigated through a series of numerical analyses performed using the Imperial College Finite Element Program (ICFEP), which is capable of simulating the fully coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) behaviour of porous materials. Particular emphasis is given to the transient thermo-mechanical response of the surrounding soil, which influences greatly the overall behaviour of the pile. This is accomplished by performing parametric studies focussing on the adopted thermo-mechanical properties of the soil. Lastly, implications for the design of these thermo-active structures are investigated.
