Activity monitoring for independent living using ceiling-mounted visual sensors

A prototype computer vision-based monitoring system to support independent living is being developed. It uses images acquired from ceiling-mounted, wide-angle cameras to detect and track the movement of an older person living alone. Analysis of this movement can potentially be used to detect unusual patterns of (in)activity, mobility and falls. User requirements and acceptability issues surrounding these possibilities are being explored using a novel drama-based approach in which video of professional actors performing carefully scripted scenarios is used. The prototype vision system is described and findings from the drama-based methodology are presented.
