Educational Animation for NaariSamatā

Authors: Mela, D.

Abstract:

This educational animation, created in collaboration with NaariSamatā, a London-based charity advocating for gender equality and diversity, addresses the critical issue of verbal bullying among young people. Targeted at primary and secondary schools, as well as educational centres in India, the animation aims to equip students with the tools to recognise and respond to verbal bullying, promoting a culture of empathy and support.

The storyline, provided by NaariSamatā’s team of writers, highlights common scenarios in which verbal bullying occurs, guiding viewers on how to identify harmful language and seek help from trusted individuals. Through this animation, young viewers are encouraged to understand the impact of words and the importance of speaking up when faced with bullying.

To bring the animation to life, I utilised cutting-edge real-time animation technologies, aligning with my PhD research. Leveraging Unreal Engine and MetaHuman Creator by Epic Games—widely used in the film and video game industries—I captured intricate character expressions by mapping my facial movements via an iPhone and Unreal Engine’s LiveLink feature. The animation was developed in 3D but rendered with a 2D cartoon shader, achieving a visually engaging 2D animation style that resonates with the young audience.

This project underscores the role of educational animation in tackling social issues, providing an accessible medium to foster awareness and resilience among students. By combining technology with a meaningful narrative, this animation for NaariSamatā aspires to inspire positive behavioural change and a supportive school environment.
