Abstract:1 Insights from economics into copyright and competition law Ruth Towse* This essay was written for those attending the CREATe Spring School in April, 2024 on Platforming Creativity. The programme mostly had a focus on IP and competition law relating to platforms. My Keynote talk, based on this essay, was intended to show how economics approaches these topics.
Introduction Every academic discipline has its rules and conventions on the scope and analysis of its content and how to incorporate changes over time - its methodology. Economics has a very broad scope within which there are many specialist branches: IP and competition mostly use industrial economics, which is part of microeconomics.
I believe that one of the difficulties of doing inter-disciplinary work is that we do not easily comprehend the underlying methodologies of different academic disciplines. This essay is an attempt to explain how economics is applied to digitisation, copyright and regulation in the creative industries.
