The traditional role of the design engineer involves technical expertise, financial awareness, communication skills and project management. Global quality of life issues must now be considered to enable the designer to play a crucial role in the world’s desire for sustainable development. Sustainable development can be described as facilitating global social needs and aspirations within an economic framework that takes real responsibility for the associated impact upon the environment. In practice, environmental, social and economic concepts should be considered for sustainable design thinking. This requires the designer to take a whole life cycle approach, an awareness of stakeholders and the willingness to address non-quantifiable aspects. This leads the designer to consider the sustainable design issues of material selection from primary processing and source to end-of-life aspects such as re-use, re-cycle and disassembly. A useful comparative design tool when taking a whole life cycle approach is life cycle assessment. This includes quantifying environmental impacts of raw materials, primary processing, manufacture, distribution, use, end of life (re-cycle, re-use). The designer has a key role in the material selection, manufacture selection, use phase and design for end of life. It is clear that the designer has a vital role in leading the world towards a sustainable future particularly in terms of resource consumption.
