Abstract:

The Golden Square Special Clinic for drug using pregnant women is a multidisciplinary clinic offering integrated, holistic care and advice to pregnant and pre-pregnant drug users in and around Aberdeen. It provides antenatal, specialist obstetric, drug and social services to clients as well as acting as a resource centre for midwifery staff throughout Grampian. The clinic first opened in 1997. Attendance has risen, perhaps because of increasing numbers of this client group, but certainly because of increasing acceptance of this service and increasing understanding of the benefits to the mother and to the baby. Initial feedback from clients suggests that the high level of support offered is not only appreciated but is successful in producing positive outcomes in terms of stabilization and reduction of drug use.
