Re-discovery of a "missing link" ciliated protozoon

Abstract:

The characteristic features of the enigmatic ciliate Psilotricha acuminata Stein, 1859 are presented. Psilotricha acuminata is a peculiar ciliate insofar as it resembles the hypotrich Euplotes but it also bears characteristics of a completely different family, the Oxytrichidae. We provide observations on its morphology, and some remarks on the ecology and geographic distribution of this ciliate. Finally, we examine some current practises in describing new ciliate species. © Asociación Española de Limnología.
