Abstract:

Developing new crops and sustainable agroecosystems on the scale needed to give growing populations food security and cash in their pockets is a major challenge for policy makers, researchers, and development agencies. In addition to international trade, many non-timber products figure strongly in local or regional markets, providing a valuable source of cash income for small-scale farmers and local people. The list of tropical crops, many economically important on a world scale, seems impressive, but in fact it represents only a tiny fraction of the total number of potentially useful species. Tropical forests are the main repository of biodiversity, containing more than half the world's species. Many of these species have been used by local people for generations, but their economic potential has largely been overlooked. -from Authors
