Abstract:We describe how a medical audit advisory group (MAAG) evolved in to a clinical governance support unit for primary care. Camden & Islington MAAG has taken a key role in assisting primary care groups and primary health care teams in receiving and implementing the clinical governance agenda. Over a number of years MAAG had developed working relationships with many key individuals and organisations including the 105 practices it served. MAAG had experience of knowing the best way to approach practices. As well as using the guidance in the literature about successful implementation of change, for us building on our past experience was an essential part of developing a response to the clinical governance agenda. We also needed to make some mistakes before we got it right. Although practices still needed reassurance about the meaning of clinical governance, we feel that we have gone a long way in ensuring that those who need to deliver clinical governance, are well equipped to do so. We are now very comfortable working with a shifting agenda, an ability that we see as being very important for working across boundaries.
