Abstract:This book places the expertise of people with lived experiences front and centre of the narrative on social exclusion, marginalisation and social stigma in the UK. By harnessing lived experience expertise, we aim to challenge taken-for-granted norms and assumptions of some of the most marginalised and excluded people in UK society. Throughout the book we present a range of lived experiences alongside a critical commentary of the impact of social stigma, exclusion and marginalisation on people’s lives. The contributors to this book chose to be involved for many reasons. They hope that sharing their stories will improve life for themselves, their families and for others experiencing stigma and social exclusion. As a reader of this book, we encourage you to put yourself in the shoes of the people you are reading about. We are keen that you develop insight, understanding and compassion for the most marginalised in our society but that you also take action to challenge it. As well as making connections with people, hearing their stories and showing compassion for their situation, we hope that you will reach out to people in your own community, and use your voice and your platform to challenge structures, policies and practices which sustain social exclusion.
