Abstract:

Some of the issues related to the potential use of a handheld gaming device as educational and assistive technology aids in higher education are discussed. A project was undertaken at the Institute of Health & Community Studies (IHCS) in Bournmouth University in 2006 to investigate the influence of the Nintendo DS and Brain Training package on students studying at the institute. The project also conducted a case study on the use of a handheld gaming device in an HE environment as a study support device. The project provided the device to 16 interested students and reports were prepared on effective performance of the device. The report included automatic recording of results and the ability to measure performance over a period of time and privacy of using the handheld device among students.
