Abstract:

This article describes some of the processes that produce and maintain diversity in tropical rainforests, and examines how this diversity is being exploited by the ecotourism industry. It highlights the costs and benefits of ecotourism for local ecosystems, communities and economies. It also explains how ecotourism can be used to safeguard future rainforest diversity. It will be of interest to those studying ecosystems and development issues in the tropics.
