Abstract:This chapter introduces the main themes of the handbook. It begins by defining what is meant by volunteering and considers the diverse forms of volunteering in the events, sport and tourism (EST) sectors. The chapter considers the limitations of current knowledge about EST volunteering and how the handbook seeks to overcome these. Finally, the structure of the handbook is set out, noting the key themes that are covered in each of the seven parts.
