Biography
Richard is an Associate Professor in Sport Event Management. His research interests focus on sport tourism, Olympic studies, the impacts and legacies of international sport events, crisis and disaster management at sports events, play-based learning methods, sport ethnography, volunteering at mega sports events, and entrepreneurship and innovation in sport and leisure. He can offer PhD supervision in these areas.
Richard's primary work has explored a series of Olympic related research themes ranging from resident perception studies to Olympic tourism. His other research interests are linked to the experiences of endurance athletes, most notably distance runners and cycling tourists. Richard has previously received major research grant from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) to develop research linked to sport tourism and sports events. He was also co-author on an International Olympic Committee (IOC) funded project examining mega sport event volunteering legacies.
Richard is lead author of the academic textbook Crisis and Disaster Management for Sport (2021), co-author of the Routledge Handbook of Events, Sport, and Tourism, (2022), and co-author of Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Sport and Leisure (2023)... Richard is a visiting scholar at University of Queensland (UQ) in Brisbane, and since 2010 he has served on the ESRC's Peer Review College (PRC), refereeing grant proposals in the social sciences.

Richard’s research interests and thought leadership includes:
First, Olympic studies, sport tourism and mega sports events. Richard’s intellectual contributions focus on sport related travel and social impact studies. He has received funding from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) in the domain of sport tourism and global major and mega sports events. Richard has co-authored numerous peer reviewed articles since 2007, plus being co-author on a leading book on the impacts and legacies of international sports events.
Second, Richard has also worked with academics from disaster and crisis management to provide thought leadership advocating resilience awareness in sports/event management. Richard is the co-author of several major studies of crisis and disaster management in sports, including as lead author on a book published by Routledge in 2021.
Third, Richard has sought to establish thought leadership and directed impactful international projects on volunteering in the sport, tourism and events sectors. He has received external funding for a co-authored project and report for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on volunteering. The intellectual contribution of Richard’s research on volunteering also led to a book published by Routledge in 2022.
Fourth, Richard is also interested in entrepreneurship and innovation. He has co-authored a leading book on entrepreneurship and innovation in the sport and leisure industries, published by Routledge in 2023.
Dr Shipway has completed several major external research projects... He continues to be successful, attracting over £500,000 of external funding supporting projects funded by the ESRC, China’s Ministry of Education, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC). His thought leadership has been recognised by national and international organisations. He has served on the ESRC’s Peer Review College since 2010, and has been a Winston Churchill Fellow since 2007.
