Biography
Dr Chris Allen is a senior academic leader in health and care education, and is currently the Head of School for Health and Care at the university.
With a strong background in nursing, higher education, and health sciences, Chris brings extensive experience in leading academic programmes, developing curriculum, and developing the future and current health and care workforce. His career reflects a sustained and consistent focus on educational excellence, student success, and innovation in healthcare professional education.
Prior to his current role, Chris held several leadership positions at the University of Southampton, including Principal Teaching Fellow and Professional Lead for Adult Nursing. In these roles, he successfully led the development and regulatory approval of multiple pre-registration nursing programmes, ensuring they met standards set out by bodies such as the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC).
Chris has significant operational and strategic leadership experience, overseeing large cohorts and multidisciplinary academic teams... His responsibilities have included curriculum design, workforce planning, staff development, student experience, and quality assurance, alongside leadership in areas such as simulation-based education and fitness to practise.
Chris began his academic career as a lecturer and senior lecturer across institutions including the University of Southampton and the University of Portsmouth, where he contributed to teaching, programme leadership, and student support in adult nursing and health sciences.
Alongside his institutional roles, Chris has contributed to the wider higher education sector as an External Examiner and Advisor for multiple universities and as a leadership coach within the Council of Deans of Health's national leadership programme, supporting the development of emerging leaders in health education.
Chris holds a PhD in Health Sciences, a Masters degree in Gerontology (Social Sciences), and a Bachelors degree in Adult Nursing, all from the University of Southampton. His research and professional interests include digital health, leadership and teamwork, social networks, ageing, and improving health and wellbeing through education and innovation.
