Abstract:This chapter focuses on an exceptionally important component of sports events: the broadcaster. It details a greater comprehension of the complexities, nuances and intentions of sport event broadcasters (SEBs) given it ultimately aid scholars in ‘unpicking’ the shifting relations between the global, the state and market, the citizen and the consumer. The chapter discusses the sporting spectacle and the political economy of the media, prior to addressing the role of broadcast professionals, who recreate sporting events within this context. It addresses the ways in which this context influences sport event broadcasting through consideration of broadcast production practices. The chapter explains these considerations together in offering three examples that raise important questions about the structure, organization and content of SEBs and together highlights the complexities of the relationships between various differential interest groups that coalesce around the sporting event and shape the meanings inherent within sport event broadcasts.
