Abstract:

The aim of this chapter is to set the scene for the environment wherein the presidential elections took place during the transitional period that lasted a little more than a year after the 25 January Revolution. The chapter further aims to highlight to what extent Egyptians were polarised by the time of the election. This could have been an early indication of the election results, which led to a second round involving the two most polarising candidates. It also gives an indication of the political situation the candidates were working in and the change in Egyptian behaviour during the course of the transitional period and the campaigns.
